My personal collection of purslane photos

Since purslane doesn't produce big, showy flowers, a lot of people might not notice it when they're walking down the street. But to me, purslane is just as beautiful and eye-catching as any flowering weed.

Here are some of my own photos of purslane (official name: Portulaca oleracea) that I've seen in my walks around town.

The photos on this page are the original work of Joan Hall. DO NOT copy them without mentioning my name and linking back to this page.

Just outside of a schoolyard. That's my hand holding a stalk of purslane to get a close-up.

The reason that I keep my eyes peeled for this plant is because purslane is edible. It's nutritional value is the subject of a lot of attention (it's extremely high in omega-3 fatty acids).

And it's cute, too! So plump and inviting.

Also from the neighborhood near our library. I love the wheel-pattern that this plant is displaying.

I took this photo inside the supermarket. This purslane looked thin, limp, and wilted compared to the purslane that's growing out on the street . . .

. . . and look at how much they're charging for it! (The Spanish name for purslane is "verdolagas").
